Newport High School vs Gower College

22nd October 2014

Newport against Gower was the live televised game for this week in the College league. The game was live via Internet streaming and could be viewed later that day on S4C at 10.30pm.

The standard of rugby played was very good and the game as a spectacle for television was great. Both sides were excellent in the contact area and both teams played with a high intensity.

The first 10 minutes were frantic and Gower College managed to keep us contained in our own half. Probably we fell into the trap of over playing and Gower, through good contact area work, managed to turn us over using great jackal technique. This resulted in them pressuring us in our own half and soon enough, a speculative kick and chase led to their first try from Keelan Giles. This was converted and Gower had a seven point lead on us.

Our response came in the 31st minute with good attacking pressure being rewarded with a penalty. Joshua Malson showing good composure to kick the penalty. The score now 3 – 7 to Gower and it remained this way until half time.

The second half produced more attacking rugby and this time it was Newport who displayed good contact area skills by frequently turning Gower over. This led to a great try by Connor Edwards, who managed to stretch out to finish a try that had started deep within Gower’s half.

This was converted by Joshua Malson, who showed great resolve to kick a touchline conversion, especially as he missed two previous penalty attempts.

The score was now 10 – 7 to Newport. Momentum was with Newport and the win look likely. Only through a lack of composure by failing to clear our 22 did Gower manage to get field position 5 metres from our line. From here they drove a line out to score the winning try. Their drive having not look threatening all through the game, proved to be their winning platform.

Newport were very disappointed to have lost the game, but take heart that they played very well and only lacked composure to have finished Gower College off.

Next week Newport play against Neath Port Talbot College in the final game of the first phase of College league fixtures.
